Student involvement

The Sustainable Built Environment Initiative (SBEI) is an MSU environmental initiative that brings students, faculty, and local communities together to explore and implement sustainable approaches. The initiative is centered on the idea that meaningful environmental planning can be strengthened by incorporating student perspectives, research, and fresh creativity into real-world projects. Rather than limiting students to the classroom, they are involved throughout the entire process, from community outreach and understanding local needs to developing site plans and creating visual renderings of designs proposed. This involvement allows students to apply concepts they have learned in the classroom to complex, place-based, real world challenges while gaining experience working with community partners and other disciplines. At the same time, communities benefit from fresh perspectives and new approaches to environmental planning and sustainable development.

By connecting student work with the needs of Michigan’s local communities, SBEI creates a space where academic learning and practical environmental action can work together. Students bring new eyes and explore the best practices that can make communities more sustainable, resilient, and better fit for the local residents. In this way, SBEI not only showcases the work and abilities of MSU students but also demonstrates how student-driven collaboration can contribute to meaningful environmental change.
