Professional Mini Course

Forest Certification and Climate Change is an online mini course designed to provide learners with a robust understanding of forest land values and ecologic services linking carbon management and climate change mitigation activities with forest certification. Graduates will develop expertise in:

  1. Valuing working forests for carbon sequestration
  2. Climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies in forest certification standards
  3. Climate benefits for forest certification in wood products
  4. Distinguishing climate benefits in chain of custody standards
  5. Ensuring climate values of harvested wood products (HWPs) through certification

This course was designed with landowners, natural resource professionals, conservationists, educations, and extension agents in mind. However, all interested individuals are invited to register.

SFI Continuing Education Eligibility

This course is offered by the Michigan State University Department of Forestry Forest Carbon and Climate Program (FCCP) in partnership with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). This training may be used to fulfill annual SFI continuing education training requirements in participating states. This course is offered three times per year according to the schedule below. Participants can register at any time, but we recommend busy professionals give themselves 2-3 weeks to complete the course. The course must be completed during the access window.

Additional Certifications

SAF: This course is approved for 6.5 Category 1 CFE hours.

Credit submission: FCCP submits CE credit documentation on behalf of participants after the course closes. No action is required from participants.

ISA: This course is approved by ISA for CEUs in the following categories: BCMA Management (3), Arborist (3), Urban Forester (3).

Credit Submission: To claim ISA CE credits, participants must provide their ISA certification ID (e.g., IL-0001T) to forestc@msu.edu within 30 days of the course closing date. FCCP will submit participant certification IDs to ISA within the required 30-day period. Participants who do not provide their certification ID within this timeframe may not be able to receive CE credit.
