The Michigan 4-H Healthy Living - Teens as Teachers Program equips youth with a growth mindset and practical skills to take an active leadership role in promoting health, wellness, and character within their local communities. The program prepares teens to serve as peer educators, mentors, and positive role models who teach younger youth how to make informed, healthy choices.
The program is open to all Michigan youth ages 13–19. No prior 4-H experience is required. We encourage participation from teens who demonstrate leadership potential, an interest in health and wellness, responsibility, and a commitment to community service and mentoring.
During this interactive, hands-on training session, teens will gain the confidence, knowledge, and tools necessary to facilitate youth-led health education. Training topics will help teens develop public speaking, group facilitation, communication, and teamwork skills.
Each teen participant will select one of the following teams to participate in during the training:
- Mindfulness Team (focused on mental health and emotional wellness)
- Physical Activity Team (focused on physical fitness and healthy lifestyles)
- Healthy Choices Team (focused on substance use prevention and healthy decision-making)
This training, and ongoing monthly Zoom meetings following the in-person training, will help prepare teen participants to lead local training sessions in their own communities for younger peers.
Participant benefits include:
- $100 Cash Stipend provided after leading their first series of educational sessions.
- Official "Teens as Teachers" T-shirt and a teaching supply kit.
- Scholarship opportunities to attend the 2027 4-H Exploration Days program and National 4-H events
- Valuable leadership, teaching, and career-readiness experiences for resumes and college applications.
